  • Flight 93 Memorial Ride

    In honor of the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Mayor Joseph E. Sinnott was honored to play a part in the Let’s Roll Flight 93 Memorial Ride as the Erie Flight Captain. Mayor Sinnott led a flight of 40 motorcycles from the Seven Springs Mountain Resort to the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, PA for official ceremonies the morning of Sunday, September 11th 2011. Organized by the Manufacturer & Business Association, a check was presented in the amount of $250,000 - funds raised by July's Roar on the Shore motorcycle rally in Erie, the auction of a motorcycle custom designed by Arlen Ness and the Flight 93 Memorial Ride, for which about 200 riders paid or raised $1,000 each to participate.

  • Thompson Land Lighthouse

    On Wednesday, July 20th, 2011, Mayor Joseph E. Sinnott, in conjunction with the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority rededicated Erie’s Land Lighthouse Park in memory of four-term Erie City Councilman, James N. Thompson. Jim served as President of Erie City Council in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2010. An advocate for those less fortunate, he worked to improve the lives of young people living in Erie’s lower east side. The park will now be known as the James N. Thompson Land Lighthouse Park and is located in east Erie at the foot of Lighthouse Street.

Erie on the Move

The Erie on the Move Task Force hosted a day of fun on June 30, 2011 at the Holland St. Playground as an opportunity for kids to get out and move while bringing neighbors and community members together to enjoy one of our community’s parks.  The event featured activities designed to get kids moving, crafts, community outreach and more. The Erie on the Move Task Force is Erie’s local chapter of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign to fight childhood obesity.  Our local chapter is supported by the City of Erie, Wellsville, Stairways Behavioral Health, the Erie County Department of Health, Central City Alliance, The Junior League of Erie, and Center City Arts.

Edward John

Captain John Nekoloff took a group of inner-city Erie children on a fishing getaway on Tuesday, August 2, 2011.  Fifteen students were chosen from three Erie area community centers: JFK, MLK, and the Booker T. Washington center. All of the students were first-time fishers and paired with a volunteer mentor for the Edward John Fishing Giveback Getaway! The Nekoloff family is committed to the City of Erie and created this opportunity as a way of giving back. Edward John Perch Fishing partnered with the City of Erie and the Gannon University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to make this opportunity a reality for these inner-city children.

Turn the Fountain Pink

As part of an ongoing effort to aid the fight against breast cancer and promote awareness of the disease, City of Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott will host a reception in East Perry Square at Noon on Thursday, October 1st 2009 and turn the fountain bright pink. The public is invited to participate in the City’s third annual event which will feature remarks by local breast cancer survivors, music by the Young Ladies Chorus of Wayne School and more.

CHAMPS

Mayor Sinnott recently met with students from the Emerson-Gridley CHAMPS Afterschool Enrichment Program, which is under the direction of Ms. Jane Ross. The CHAMPS program provides a safe, challenging and fun learning experience for Erie’s youth as they develop social, emotional, physical, cultural and academic skills. The students are currently learning about careers and were presented with the opportunity to ask questions of the Mayor.

Salute to Veterans

February 5, 2009   Mayor Sinnott met with Erie Veterans Administration Hospital - Voluntary Services Officer, Karen O'Neil, and Erie County Veterans Administration Director, Mary Knight-Strong, to proclaim February 9-14th "National Salute to Veterans" Week in the City of Erie. National Salute to Veterans is an annual tradition that offers an opportunity to recognize the individuals whose contributions helped preserve America's freedom.  Mayor Sinnott encourages Erie residents to take time to visit local veterans at the VA hospital, the Soldiers and Sailors home or other local institutions - to show gratitude and respect to these admirable citizens. He would also like to remind, especially the youth in our community, of the courage and sacrifice these men and women made, fighting to maintain our freedom. Mayor Sinnott will visit the Erie VA Hospital on Tuesday, February 10th at 10 AM.

Lady Knights

February 5, 2009   Mayor Sinnott, Gannon University Lady Knights and the American Cancer Society have teamed up with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WCBA) to host the 2nd annual Pink Zone game to support breast cancer awareness and to raise funds to benefit the Erie unit of the American Cancer Society. Last year’s inaugural game raised $10,000 for the cause and Mayor Sinnott is challenging the Erie Community to help exceed that amount this year. Come out and show your support for the Gannon Lady Knight’s on February 21, it’s a double header at the Hammermill Center beginning at 1PM; plan to stay for the Men’s game at 3PM, admission is free to both games.

Graffiti Task Force

At a press conference on Thursday, March 20th Mayor Joseph E. Sinnott announced that the Graffiti Task Force is in place and will operate under the direction of District Justice Tom Carney. The group will work jointly to identify and remove graffiti from across the City of Erie. Focused on identifying and prosecuting “taggers” to the fullest extent of the law, the Mayor’s Graffiti Task Force will pursue full restitution from the taggers for their crimes.

Roar on the Shore

August 10, 2007 - Mayor Sinnott participated in the 1st Annual Roar on the Shore, an event sponsored by the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority and the Manufacturers’ Association. Mayor Sinnott is seen here with "Easy Rider" star, Peter Fonda. The Mayor rode in the afternoon parade of bikes, from the Presque Isle Downs Casino to the Liberty Park, Pepsi Amphitheater. Proceeds benefited the John Kanzius Cancer Research Fund. Over $50,000 was raised for this worthy cause!
